Shawarma Land, a small business in West Houston on Westheimer, opens and is burglarized hours after closing on its first day of business.

On the evening of Shawarma Land’s grand opening, a thief broke into the small west Houston business and made off with over $1,000 in cash. The Houston Police Department reported on the incident, which left owners Mohammad Assaad and his team feeling disappointed but resilient.

According to Assaad, the thief quickly snatched the cash register from its place upon entering and fled through the back door of the restaurant. In their haste, the thief left behind a trail of broken glass that will need to be cleaned up before Shawarma Land can reopen for business.

Despite the setback, Assaad remains optimistic about the future of his restaurant. He chose to open Shawarma Land in a bustling area due to its diverse customer base. The restaurant was a long-held dream for Assaad, who spent months perfecting recipes and renovating the space.

The neighborhood where Shawarma Land is located has seen a high number of burglaries in recent years, according to ABC13 Neighborhood Safety Tracker. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder that crime can happen anywhere, even in areas with a lot of foot traffic.

Despite this setback, Assaad remains committed to serving delicious shawarma to his customers. Houston police are actively investigating the burglary, but no arrests have been made yet. For updates on this story, follow Alex Bozarjian on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
