Shoulder Tendon Tears Result in Muscle Wasting

Mr. Tu, a 63-year-old man, has been experiencing shoulder pain for many years due to heavy work. Recently, he completely torn his rotator cuff tendon and has muscle atrophy. Dr. Ho Van Duy An, an orthopedic surgeon from the Trauma Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, diagnosed Mr. Tu with a severe tear in the rotator cuff tendon of his shoulder. The rotator cuff is made up of four tendons that play a crucial role in arm extension and shoulder rotation movements.

Mr. Tu had a complete transverse tear of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons, leading to significant damage. His continued strenuous activities without rest worsened the tear over time, resulting in muscle atrophy and degeneration of the tendons. To address this issue, Dr. An recommended a tendon graft using an allograft, a medical material made from human skin that acts as a bridge for the torn tendon to heal and attach to, improving the success rate of surgery.

The surgery was performed using an endoscopic method, a minimally invasive technique with low infection risks. Within days after the surgery, Mr. Tu experienced relief from pain and improved mobility in his shoulder joint. He was able to perform basic movements and was on track for a full recovery within six months.

Dr. An emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment of shoulder injuries to prevent complications like complete tears or degeneration of tendons that can lead to long-term weakness or loss of movement or even increase the risk of developing shoulder arthritis later on life.
