A single of the greatest accomplishments a qualified skateboarder can realize is operating with their shoe sponsor on a signature silhouette—putting a solution out into the planet that tends to make a statement about who they are and what they stand for. Seeing other individuals wearing the shoe delivers a tangible reminder of their influence in the sport.
For Zion Wright, 24, who joined the Vans skate group two years ago, that moment has arrived with the Zahba x Zion Wright, his new silhouette that launched globally on March 16. It is a project Wright says he went “straight to operate on” when he signed with the action sports heavyweight.
There’s no doubt that in the planet of skateboarding, shoe sponsors are all the things. So it was a massive deal when Wright left Nike in March 2021, arriving at that year’s Dew Tour—a Tokyo Olympics qualifier—with no shoe sponsor.
Of course, plans had been in motion for months beforehand to bring Wright onto the Vans group, and the move was officially announced just prior to the Tokyo Games started in July 2021.
As quickly as Wright joined Vans, it felt like his profession shifted into hyperdrive. He came into Dew Tour in Could 2021 ranked 16th amongst the American males competing for the 3 Olympic bids in men’s skateboarding park, and his statement win earned him the third and final spot.

Competing in skateboarding’s Olympic debut is no doubt a cornerstone achivement. But for Wright, who came up in the sport skating all the things he could obtain in Jupiter, Florida—he’s a single of handful of qualified skateboarders equally at residence in street, vert or park—it’s far from his defining a single.
Even though he’s no grizzled veteran at 24, Wright is currently focused on assisting create and mentor the subsequent generation of skaters, and he in no way loses sight of the forces that got him here—his good friends in Jupiter, his supporters and, largely, his father.
Wright delves deeper into these themes in the brief film We’re From Right here, produced in concert with the improvement of the Zahba.
“The documentary we produced for this project was to give viewpoint on exactly where we’re from and how it shaped me into the individual I am right now,” Wright told me. “My father was the a single that sacrificed to get me to exactly where I am right now. He’s nonetheless a component of the journey and component of the ride.”
The Zahba boasts lots of small information that spend homage to Wright’s background and values. Crucially, Wright wanted to style some thing that he would want to put on.
The shoe’s muted earth tones recall the beaches of Jupiter, Florida, even though the space-dust speckle on the black sole and the embroidered planet Jupiter are far more overt space themes. The lighthouse from Wright’s hometown seems on the sole, and the heel functions a deco stitch of his region code (561, but in Roman numerals, which are eminiently far more fashionable).

The shoe is constructed making use of Vans’ ImpactWaffle™ technologies, which aims to supply an perfect mixture of influence protection and boardfeel. The Zhaba also follows strict sustainability material suggestions regenerative, responsibly sourced renewable and recycled components make at least 30% of the solution.
“It implies the planet to me, to have my personal representation and taste and swag as a component of some thing new and to be a component of the Vans loved ones,” Wright stated. “I was seriously hands on all via the method from the style and the inspiration, from the Jupiter motif, the Galaxy sole, that go back to my hometown, Jupiter, Florida.”

Wright also finds inspiration in the subsequent generation of skaters and how they continue to push the sport, as effectively as in music.
“Seeing the younger generation coming up and the aspect of the grind—one skater, Daiko Hoshino, who I met lately, has been killing it,” Wright stated. “And then, there’s all my good friends at residence in Florida. Music is generally an inspiration for what I do, how I move… it drives me.”
To celebrate the relase, Wright and Vans hosted a skate session with the Harold Hunter Foundation, which aims to market access to skateboarding for underserved youth, at Vans’ Skate Space 198 in Brooklyn, New York.
The Zahba x Zion Wright retails for $one hundred and is offered as of March 16 on Vans’ web page and at choose retail places.

I have been writing about action sports and the Olympics and Paralympics for far more than a decade, getting covered Summer time and Winter X Games, Summer time and Winter Olympics and Paralympics, Dew Tour, planet championships, and far more. I cover the sector from just about every angle, but my favored pieces to create are generally profiles of the athletes that make these sports so compelling. I am initially from New Hampshire, exactly where I reduce my teeth as a snowboarder (and reduce up my knees and elbows…a lot), and now reside in Chicago, a city that holds a gold medal in my heart in spite of its lack of elevation.
