Smartmatic Settles Defamation Lawsuit Against OANN, Takes Steps to Clear Name from Baseless Election Claims

In a recent development, voting technology company Smartmatic has settled a defamation lawsuit against conservative news outlet One America News Network (OANN) on April 16, 2024. The settlement marks the company’s efforts to push back against the baseless accusations made against them in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election.

Smartmatic was at the center of false fraud claims surrounding the 2020 presidential election and used their voting technology in only one location, Los Angeles County, which is known as a Democratic stronghold within a state that was not a key battleground state during the presidential election. However, despite this, the uproar and misinformation surrounding their involvement in the election prompted legal action to address the false accusations made against them.

The settlement with OANN highlights the company’s commitment to clearing its name and reputation from baseless allegations that emerged in the aftermath of the election. While OANN chose not to comment on the settlement or provide any further statements on the matter, it is part of a larger trend where voting technology companies are seeking legal recourse to address false narratives and conspiracy theories that have circulated following the 2020 election. This resolution marks an important step towards restoring trust in voting technology and ensuring fair elections for all.
