Ryan Crosby, who has been the president of publishing at Riot Games since 2021, has been named the new CEO of the World Surf League. Crosby will take on his new role starting on May 13 and will be responsible for growing the league’s digital presence, marketing surfing stars and taking advantage of increased attention that surfing will receive this summer during the Olympics in Tahiti.
In a statement, Crosby expressed his excitement for the new role, noting that surfing is more than just a competitive sport but also a way of life and a passionate global community. He aims to elevate the WSL brand, deepen connections with fans and continue building an organization that surfers can be proud of.
Crosby will also be tasked with managing the recent retirement of five-time world champion Carissa Moore, the potential departure of Kelly Slater and reigning champion Filipe Toledo taking a one-year break for mental health reasons. His appointment comes after the abrupt departure of previous CEO Erik Logan last June, with WSL ownership taking a more hands-on role in league management.
The WSL announced new streaming partnerships with ESPN+ and added sponsors like Bonsoy, Lexus and Eventbrite for the current season. The WSL Finals are scheduled to take place in California in September. The league highlighted Crosby’s personal connection to surfing, including his work with Surfrider Foundation, and his passion for the sport as key reasons for his selection as CEO.
