Thailand’s 500 billion baht handout scheme under scrutiny: Is it truly a targeted stimulus measure?

The 500 billion baht ($13.53 billion) handout scheme in Thailand is being seen as a stimulus measure aimed at supporting the economy rather than targeting specific vulnerable groups, according to a finance ministry official. Paopoom Rojanasakul, secretary to the finance minister, made this statement in response to questions about a news report suggesting that the central bank had raised concerns about the handout plan. In a press conference earlier that day, the central bank had mentioned that it had no objection to stimulus measures but preferred them to be targeted for specific groups.

While some have expressed concerns about the need for targeted assistance, the government remains committed to implementing measures that will benefit the economy as a whole. According to Rojanasakul, the goal of the handout scheme is to provide an economic boost and encourage growth. By providing financial support through this scheme, the government hopes to stimulate economic activity and aid in Thailand’s recovery from the impact of COVID-19.
