Animal experts and local doctors in San Luis Obispo, Calif. are urging caution around birds as the avian flu continues to spread across the country. SLO County Public Health is advising individuals to avoid eating or drinking around birds or livestock to prevent the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). Dr. Rick Rosen of San Luis Obispo County Public Health has noted that the virus has now spread from birds to other animals such as cows, chickens, and cats, and emphasizes the importance of washing hands after handling animals or items in their living spaces.
The FDA recently reported that some dairy products in grocery stores have tested positive for the flu, with one dairy worker in Texas also testing positive. As a precaution, local doctors and animal service crews are recommending that farmworkers wear masks and gloves when interacting with certain animals. It is advised to avoid direct contact with sick or dead birds, livestock, and their feces unless wearing recommended personal protective equipment.
Beachgoers are reminded not to touch or approach dead birds, as this can also pose a risk of exposure to the virus. If individuals have had contact with a sick or dead bird or other animal, they are advised to watch for symptoms and contact a doctor immediately if they begin to feel unwell. For those without a regular doctor, Public Health can be reached at 805-781-5500 for guidance and assistance.
