The Cowboys have added running back Royce Freeman to their roster on a one-year deal, according to Todd Archer of ESPN. Despite this signing, Dallas is still expected to draft a running back next week due to the loss of Tony Pollard. Freeman brings a wealth of experience to the team, joining Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner on the depth chart.
In his career, Freeman has played for four different teams since being drafted by the Broncos in 2018. Last season, he played for the Rams and rushed for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 77 carries. Over the past four seasons, Freeman has recorded 209 carries for 775 yards and two touchdowns, along with 29 receptions for 204 yards. His best season came as a rookie when he had 521 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 130 carries. In his second season, he had a career-high 175 touches for a total of 752 yards from scrimmage.
With Freeman’s addition to the roster, the Cowboys now have three running backs vying for playing time alongside Ezekiel Elliott and Michael Gallup. The team is likely to use all three players in different roles throughout the season to maximize their strengths and minimize injuries.
