The Hidden Dangers of Forever Chemicals: Understanding PFAS and their Impact on Our Health and Environment

In this edition of Spot on Science, Jeff St. Clair discusses forever chemicals, substances that do not easily break down in the environment and have the potential to contaminate drinking water sources and build up in wildlife and humans around the world. These chemicals pose risks to our health, with one common type being PFAS, found in various products such as nonstick skillets, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant fabrics, fast food wrappers, and certain types of dental floss. Some makeup products may also contain PFAS. Research has shown that elevated levels of PFAS can lead to issues with the liver, kidneys, thyroid glands, and digestive system. To minimize exposure to these substances, it is important to be aware of their presence in everyday products and make informed choices. By understanding the potential risks associated with PFAS and other forever chemicals, we can take steps to protect our health and the environment.
