TikTok Lite, an extension application of the popular social media platform, is currently being investigated by the European Commission for its compliance with transparency and protection of minors regulations. The app rewards users for watching and interacting with videos, and this feature has caught the attention of authorities due to concerns about addictive behaviors and potential risks to minors.
In response to these concerns, ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, has decided to voluntarily suspend the reward functions of TikTok Lite while they collaborate with the European Commission. The suspension is part of their efforts to address the issues raised by authorities and ensure that their platform is safe for all users.
Thierry Breton, the European Commissioner for the Internal Market, acknowledged this decision and emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential risks associated with social media platforms. He highlighted concerns about addictive behavior risks and applauded TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program in Europe.
Breton also indicated that cases against TikTok continue due to its addictive potential and emphasized the need for new legislation, such as the Digital Services Law, to ensure that online spaces are safe for all users. In a brief statement shared on social media, ByteDance announced their plans to continue working constructively with authorities and address any concerns raised in order to provide a safe environment for their users.
