Kelvin Kiptum, 24, World Marathon Record Holder, Dies in Car Accident

The tragic loss of Kenyan marathon runner Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, has left the athletics community in shock. Kiptum, who was just 24 years old, held the world marathon record and had broken the course record for the London Marathon last year.

Gervais Hakizimana, Kiptum’s coach, also died in the accident. The Kenyan member of parliament, Gideon Kimaiyo, confirmed their deaths in a statement and expressed his condolences to their families.

Seb Coe, president of World Athletics, expressed his deepest condolences on behalf of the international athletics community. He recognized Kiptum’s incredible legacy and said that he will be deeply missed. Coe also praised Hakizimana for his dedication as a coach and for helping to guide Kiptum to success.
