Uber Eats Couriers in Belgium Take Strike for Better Pay and Working Conditions

On Tuesday and Wednesday, food deliverers working for the Uber Eats platform in Belgium will be striking for better pay and working conditions. The strike action is being led by the Brussels courier collective, The House of Deliverers, with the support of the Christian trade union ACV.

The couriers are demanding a pay increase of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled. They argue that fees have not increased since 2019 despite a 20 percent increase in inflation. Additionally, they are criticizing Uber for not consulting with them on their employment status and the government’s lack of regulation in this area.

In recent years, meal deliverers have been considered employees by the labor court in Belgium, but no changes have been made yet. The couriers expect several hundred participants in the strike, with a focus on Brussels but also reaching out to couriers in other cities like Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.

The meal deliverers have previously requested consultation with Uber but have not received a response. This strike action is part of ongoing efforts to advocate for better working conditions and fair compensation for food deliverers. The couriers are determined to make their voices heard and push for positive changes in their industry.
