Unveiling the Future of Elderly Well-being: A 12-Month Research Trial in East Sussex

A new research project has been launched in East Sussex to determine the effectiveness of technology in enhancing the well-being of older adults. The Living Lab initiative is focused on exploring how digital technology can improve the mental and physical health of elderly individuals. This 12-month trial project will play a crucial role in shaping the adult social care services and public health decisions made by East Sussex County Council.

The project was unveiled at a sheltered housing facility in Peacehaven, featuring an interactive digital games table known as the ‘Magic Table.’ Through interactive light projections, residents can engage in physical, social, and cognitive activities like puzzles, games, and tactile challenges. Virtual reality headsets are also available for residents to enjoy virtual day trips and experiences.

In addition to the ‘Magic Table,’ various other technologies are being offered to clients as part of the project. Heat sensor fall monitors and sport Smartwatches are among the devices being used to track residents’ movements and monitor their health. The goal is not only to improve the health and quality of life of older individuals but also to provide support for carers by encouraging interaction and creating engaging activities.

The pilot project is a collaborative effort between East Sussex County Council, NHS Sussex, and the University of Brighton. Dr. Theo Fotis, lead researcher at the university’s School of Sport and Health Sciences, emphasized the importance of the Living Lab concept in allowing all stakeholders to work together to test these technologies in a real-world setting and gather feedback from residents themselves.

This new research project has significant implications for older adults’ mental and physical health as well as public health decisions made by East Sussex County Council. By leveraging technology effectively, this initiative could pave the way for more innovative solutions that improve older adults’ lives while also supporting their carers.
