Governor Gordon’s Response to PacifiCorp’s Carbon Capture Technology Installation Plan at Jim Bridger Power Plant

Governor Mark Gordon has expressed his excitement over PacifiCorp’s updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) for 2023, which outlines the direction for how the state’s largest utility will source its energy for the next two decades. The plan includes a shift in focus from eliminating coal-fired power plants to using carbon capture technology on coal units at the Jim Bridger Power Plant in Sweetwater County.

The Wyoming Public Service Commission will review the IRP and evaluate its use of carbon capture technology to meet lower CO2 standards mandated by federal regulations and consumer preferences. Regulated utilities are now required to make a good faith effort to sell coal units before closing them, and this new legislation has prompted a change in approach.

While IRPs are subject to change, the selection of carbon capture as the preferred portfolio for Jim Bridger Power Plant Units 3 & 4 represents an important shift toward producing 24-hour dispatchable power. This change is seen as economically beneficial and a win for Wyoming, consumers, and PacifiCorp’s customers.

PacifiCorp has stated that it is committed to meeting its sustainability goals while also providing reliable and affordable energy to its customers. The company plans to continue investing in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power while also utilizing carbon capture technology to reduce emissions from its coal-fired units.
