The New York Yankees are getting ready to kick off the 2024 season with a showdown against the Houston Astros. Due to injuries to star players such as Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu, and Oswald Peraza, the projected 26-man roster has undergone some changes. Manager Aaron Boone will rely on a combination of spring training standouts and recent acquisitions to bolster the bench depth.
In the starting lineup, LeMahieu will be out due to a foot injury, with Berti stepping in as the third baseman after being acquired from the Miami Marlins in a trade. The everyday starters remain largely intact.
On the bench, Wells will serve as Trevino’s backup behind him at catcher. Cabrera is ready to play first base and also fill in as an outfielder if needed. With Rortvedt having been traded to the Tampa Bay Rays, Wells is now the lone backup catcher on the roster.
The rotation will see Gil taking over as Cole’s fifth starter replacement. Cortes will start on Opening Day alongside Rodon, hoping for a strong performance that could cement his place on the team moving forward. The success of the rotation will determine Gil’s future with the Yankees.
Weaver will begin his season in the bullpen alongside Gil in what promises to be an exciting start for this reshaped roster of talented players and promising prospects alike.
