Yankees acquire INF Jon Berti from Marlins following DJ LeMahieu’s foot injury

In 2023, the New York Yankees acquired Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins in a trade that addressed their injury concerns. The deal came after it was announced that DJ LeMahieu would start the season on the injured list with a bruised foot. The three-team agreement involved the Yankees sending outfield prospect John Cruz to the Marlins and catcher Ben Rortvedt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In return, they received Berti, who had a standout season with the Marlins in 2022 and was named an All-Star for his performance.

Berti’s impressive statistics in 2022 earned him career-best marks in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. His .294 batting average was an improvement of more than 40 points from his previous year, while his .344 on-base percentage was also up more than 10 points. Additionally, he hit 13 home runs and had a slugging percentage of .405, which ranked among the top players in his league. Berti was also considered an above-average fielder at both shortstop and third base based on stats like outs above average and defensive runs saved.

With the Yankees, Berti is expected to primarily play at third base, a position previously held by LeMahieu. However, Oswaldo Cabrera will likely serve as a backup at this position as well. The other infield positions are fairly set with Anthony Volpe at shortstop, Gleyber Torres at second base, and Anthony Rizzo at first base. While Berti has experience in the outfield as well, he is unlikely to play there for the Yankees due to their already strong lineup that includes players like Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham.

The Yankees did not give up top prospects for Berti in this trade. John Cruz is an 18-year-old outfield prospect ranked as the 28th best prospect in their system according to MLB Pipeline while Shane Sasaki is not in the top 30 rankings.

Overall, this move by the Yankees addresses their injury concerns while also adding depth to their roster with a player who had a standout season in 2022 and is expected to perform well for them in future seasons as well.
