Over 100 people have been hospitalized and five have died after taking supplements produced by Osaka-based Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co. The Japanese health ministry has issued warnings about the recalled products, as some may still be on the market and pose health risks. The company faced criticism for not disclosing internal problems earlier, as they were aware of issues since January but did not make a public announcement until March 22.
President Akihiro Kobayashi issued a public apology on behalf of the company, expressing deep remorse for the deaths and illnesses caused by their products. The company has recalled all affected products, including food items that contain benikoji for coloring. Some analysts attribute the problems to recent deregulation initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth.
The supplements in question contain a red mold known as benikoji, which has been linked to kidney problems. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the health risks associated with these products. Many people who consumed the supplements experienced serious side effects, leading to hospitalization and even death. Despite being aware of these issues since January, the company did not make any public announcements until several months later.
