Meta, previously known as Facebook, has a workforce of around 67,000 employees and pays its employees an average salary of just over $379,000 in 2023. This figure is higher than the average tech job but lower than what Google and Amazon pay their employees. While software engineers and researchers tend to earn more in base pay than product designers and user experience professionals within Meta, a median salary of $379,000 is not uncommon in Big Tech. Industry giants like Google and Amazon also have positions that pay well above $300,000.
The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, earned a total compensation of $24.4 million in 2023 with most of it coming from security and logistical expenses. However, Zuckerberg only took a $1 salary last year with the majority of his wealth tied to stock options. Despite the high compensation, Meta has been on an efficiency drive since 2022 which led to frequent layoffs. The company reported strong earnings but also plans to increase investments in AI which has made investors cautious about the company’s future.
