In Windham, Maine, a new conservation area has been unveiled to the public after years of planning and development. The 700-acre protected land features eight miles of trails, providing opportunities for bikers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts to explore this pristine area.
The conservation area seamlessly links to an existing preserve in Windham and Falmouth, creating a vast network of outdoor recreational opportunities spread across over 2,000 acres. This network includes hiking trails, biking trails, snowmobile trails, horse trails, and even some ATV trails. The initiative is expected to contribute to economic growth in Maine, given the state’s thriving outdoor recreation economy valued at $3 billion.
Mark Morrison, an outdoor enthusiast, highlighted the significance of the new conservation area in providing natural spaces for families to enjoy and spend time together. The project was made possible through collaboration between Windham leaders and the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust, with the support of the “Land for Maine’s Future” fund.
Town manager Barry Tibbetts expressed his excitement for the new outdoor space, describing it as a universal opening for people to connect with nature and stay healthy. He encouraged the public to visit and enjoy the conservation area year-round, describing it as a gift that will last forever.
