In the 2024 Australian Open Championships, Elizabeth Dekkers broke a new All Comers Record in the 200m fly event with a time of 2:05.20. This was not only a new personal best for the 19-year-old swimmer, but also surpassed her previous record of 2:05.26 set in 2023. The Australian soil has never seen such speed before, as All Comers Records represent the fastest time ever recorded by any swimmer from any nation on this land.
Olympic medalist Brianna Throssell finished second in the event with a time of 2:06.98, while Abbey Connor took home the bronze with a time of 2:08.09. Despite setting this impressive new record, Dekkers remains ranked third among Australian all-time performers in the 200m fly event and is currently ranked 14th worldwide.
Dekkers’ two quickest times differed by just .06 seconds, with most of the gap coming from her faster start this year. However, this record sets her up for an exciting future at international competitions as well.
In addition to breaking records at home, Dekkers has also achieved podium finishes at three international events last year. She won silver in Fukuoka with a time of 2:05.46 and bronze at the Short Course World Championships with a time of 2:03.94. Most notably, she earned gold at the Commonwealth Games with a time of 2:07.26.
Her success on both domestic and international stages showcases her strong consistency and talent as one of Australia’s top young swimmers today.
