Universal Music Group (UMG) and TikTok have reached a deal that will allow users of the social network to use songs from popular artists like Taylor Swift and Bad Bunny in their videos once more. This “multidimensional” licensing agreement covers UMG artists, composers, and labels, reintroducing their music to the platform.
The partnership between TikTok and UMG is expected to bring significant benefits to both parties. The agreement includes new terms for remuneration and safeguards against AI-generated content, which is becoming increasingly prevalent in the music industry. Additionally, TikTok has implemented new monetization strategies for artists, as well as analytical tools and sales capabilities that will help them expand their global fan base by leveraging the platform’s reach.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew expressed satisfaction in finding a way forward with Universal Music Group. He said that the two entities are currently working to make UMG’s songs available for users of the platform in a timely manner. Meanwhile, UMG president and CEO Lucian Grainge emphasized the importance of this agreement in a press release, highlighting the value of music, human artistry, and the wellbeing of the creative community.
Under this new agreement, TikTok users can incorporate UMG’s song catalog into their content. The catalog features popular artists such as Taylor Swift, Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Ariana Grande, and Drake. This partnership will enable TikTok users to create more engaging content while also supporting some of the biggest names in music today.
