Respiratory Therapy Technology Program Now Available at COTC

Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is set to launch a new associate degree program in respiratory therapy technology at their Newark campus. The program is currently undergoing accreditation confirmation and classes are set to start this fall. The application deadline is June 15. In addition to the Newark campus, COTC also has branch campuses in Coshocton, Mount Vernon, and Pataskala.

The need for respiratory therapists in Licking County and beyond has led to the creation of this program. Program director Tyler Richards emphasized the growing number of retiring therapists compared to new entrants into the workforce. There are currently numerous open positions in hospitals, with more expected as facilities expand.

Respiratory therapists play a critical role in helping individuals with lung diseases or disorders recover or rehabilitate. They work in various medical settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units, and rehabilitation centers. The two-year program will involve both classroom learning and clinical placements. Graduates will be eligible to pursue the registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).

Upon completion of the program, graduates can expect to earn a median wage of $65,760 annually, according to Ohio Labor Market information. Students have the opportunity to apply for a limited permit after one year, allowing them to gain experience in the field and establish connections while supporting themselves financially.

To apply for the program, students must submit a free application for admission and a respiratory therapy technology program application.
