In 2021, the Denver Broncos Foundation launched Colorado’s girls flag football pilot program in collaboration with the Broncos and CHSAA. The program was funded by the Foundation for its inaugural seasons from 2022-23, involving over 50 schools, 10 school districts, and nearly 1,500 girls who participated in around 850 games.
The program experienced significant growth in 2023, with a 161 percent increase in participants (1,316) and a 310 percent increase in the number of games played (680). CHSAA Commissioner Mike Krueger expressed his excitement over the program’s success, emphasizing the values of empowerment, teamwork, and breaking barriers that it promotes.
The Broncos have consistently supported the pilot program, hosting championship tournaments and round-robin exhibition events at the Centura Health Training Center in recent years. Broncos leadership and players have been actively involved in these events, demonstrating their backing for the program and its participants.
With flag football now officially sanctioned by CHSAA, the Denver Broncos Foundation will continue its support through seasonal programming, coaching clinics, recognition for athletes and coaches, and initiatives promoting youth health and wellness. The foundation aims to nurture leadership skills, confidence building, and equality both on and off the field. This effort paves the way for inclusivity and self-empowerment among all girls who participate in this sport.
