Large-scale retail worker strike threatens Easter spending

On the eve of Easter, several unions in Italy are calling for a boycott of purchases from large chains. The Filcams-Cgil, Fisascat-Cisl, and UILTUCS unions are urging consumers to refrain from shopping at branded stores associated with Federdistribuzione, which has failed to renew the National Labor Contract that expired in 2019.

The unions are expressing their frustration with the lack of progress in negotiations and accusing Federdistribuzione of irresponsibility for its actions. They are urging employees to participate in a strike scheduled for March 30th to protest these actions. Some of the stores included in the boycott are Carrefour, Ikea, Lidl, Zara, and many others.

By boycotting these stores on the day of the strike, consumers can show their support for workers’ rights and demand fair labor practices. The unions are mobilizing over 240,000 employees across various sectors of commercial distribution to participate in the strike. Overall, they are calling for solidarity among employees and consumers to stand up against what they see as unfair treatment and disregard for workers’ rights in the commercial distribution sector.

According to union leaders, Federdistribuzione has shown intolerance towards contracts and made requests that undermine workers’ rights and guarantees established under the National Collective Labor Agreement. The unions are accusing Federdistribuzione of irresponsibility and demanding a day of strike action to protest these actions.

The Filcams-Cgil union is one of the largest trade unions in Italy with more than 5 million members spread across various sectors such as retail trade, finance, public administration, health care, education and social services.

Fisascat-Cisl is another major union representing more than 3 million members across various industries including construction tradesmen, engineers and technicians.

UILTUCS is also one of Italy’s largest trade unions representing more than 1 million members across various industries such as healthcare professionals.

Together they have called on all those who believe in fair labor practices to join them on this day of action by not shopping at federdistribuzione associated branded stores on march 30th.
