Tessa Sermet, an Assistant Professor of French, recently co-edited the release of “Continuum: French Science Fiction Short Stories” by Ooligan Press. This collection brings together a mix of classic and contemporary French science fiction stories that have been translated into English for a wider audience to appreciate.
The stories cover a variety of themes including simulated reality, speciesism, ecology, and transhumanism. Sermet aimed to offer readers a more modern collection than what was currently available by curating stories from different authors, time periods, and subjects. As part of her collaboration on the project, she not only co-edited the collection but also translated two of the stories. This was her first experience translating fiction, and she found it to be a challenging yet rewarding opportunity to work with distinct styles and eras of writing.
To enhance the reading experience for English-speaking audiences, each section of the anthology includes an “Expansion” segment that provides additional information about the authors and offers discussion questions that can be used in academic settings or book club discussions.
