The former mayor of Bari, Simeone Di Cagno Abbrescia, has passed away at the age of 80 after a period of illness. The funeral chapel will be open at the town hall starting this afternoon, with the funeral scheduled for tomorrow at 10:30 in the Basilica of San Nicola.
Di Cagno Abbrescia began his political career in the PRI and later joined Forza Italia in 1994. He served as mayor of Bari with Berlusconi’s party, being elected in 1995 and re-elected in 1999. After his term, he ran for the Chamber in 2006 with FI, then PDL in 2008. In 2009, he attempted to become mayor again but was defeated in the run-off by Michele Emiliano.
