Murphy of the Giants furiously throws gear after being injured in heavy rain

On Saturday night at Citizens Bank Park, the San Francisco Giants suffered another blow to their catching depth. Veteran backup catcher Tom Murphy sustained an injury in the second inning of the game against the Philadelphia Phillies, adding to the team’s woes after Patrick Bailey was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list earlier that day.

The game was delayed by rain for 70 minutes before starting amidst a downpour at 7:15 p.m. ET. It remains unclear what exact injury Murphy sustained, but his frustration was evident in the dugout as he angrily slammed his catchers gear. Blake Sabol, who was recalled earlier to take Bailey’s roster spot, entered the game in place of Murphy.

With Joey Bart no longer in the organization, the Giants’ catching depth is being tested with the back-to-back injuries. If Murphy is sidelined for an extended period of time, it will put a strain on the team’s resources. Jakson Reetz, a minor league player with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, could potentially be called up by the Giants to fill in if Murphy’s injury turns out to be serious.

The Giants will need to make adjustments to their lineup in the wake of these injuries and hope for a swift recovery for both Murphy and Bailey. The team’s depth will be put to the test as they navigate
