On March 28th and 29th, the NATO Air Operations Command and Control Center raised an alarm to intercept two Russian IL-20 model planes that were flying in international airspace on the border with the area under NATO control. According to defense sources, the Italian fighters scrambled due to a lack of contact between the Russian aircraft and air traffic management control towers. The Italian Air Force, operating within the NATO Enhanced Air Policing mission, deployed Eurofighter aircraft from four air defense wings to intercept and identify the Russian planes before returning to base.
The Italian contingent at the Malbork base includes flight groups and technical and logistical personnel working 24/7 to ensure the take-off and interception of any suspicious radar traces. The contingent is under direct national dependency and collaborates with the Polish Air Force to fulfill their mission. This marks the second time Italian forces have been used in enhanced Air Policing operations in Poland.
