When I first arrived in Japan, the country was facing its third Lost Decade of economic decline. Little did we know that it would turn into two more, and the gloom that hung over the country in 2003 seemed never-ending despite efforts to recover from the economic downturn. The economy had peaked in 1989, but since then, Japan had been unable to shake off the effects of the recession. It was similar to the stifling low-pressure front that seemed to linger over Tokyo during my arrival in the bustling city.
Despite the economic struggles, the malaise was not immediately visible to me. I had come to Japan as part of an exchange program to teach English in rural Hiroshima. Having been exposed to Japanese culture since my childhood in Ireland, I found Japan to be a sophisticated and technologically advanced country. It felt like a good fit for someone fresh out of college, offering a unique sense of adventure being far away from home.
As I settled into my new life in Hiroshima, I began to see how deeply entrenched Japan’s economic struggles were. The town was struggling with declining populations and shuttered businesses, and many residents were struggling to make ends meet. Despite this, there was a resilience and determination among the people that impressed me greatly. They worked hard every day and never gave up on their dreams or aspirations, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Over time, I came to realize that Japan’s economy was not just about numbers or statistics; it was about people and their lives. The struggles they faced were real and tangible, but so too were their triumphs and successes. As an outsider coming from a different culture and background, I felt privileged to have witnessed firsthand how determined and hardworking people could overcome adversity.
