John Hynes, who has experience coaching at the NHL level with the Minnesota Wild and the Nashville Predators, as well as at the AHL level, has been named as the coach for the 2024 U.S. men’s national team for the upcoming IIHF men’s world championship in Czechia. The event will take place from May 10-26 in Prague and Ostrava, as announced by USA Hockey on Friday. Hynes last coached the national team in 2019 and recently completed his first season as head coach of the Wild, falling short of making the playoffs.
Brett Peterson, general manager of the national team and a member of Florida Panthers’ management team expressed confidence in Hynes’ leadership. Peterson highlighted Hynes’ passion, energy and extensive experience in coaching particularly on world stage as key strengths that will benefit the national team in their quest for gold. Hynes, a native of Warwick, Rhode Island has a longstanding history with USA Hockey having served as a head coach for the national team development program from 2003-2009. He also played college hockey at Boston University before embarking on his coaching career.
Hynes brings a wealth of expertise to his role with USA Hockey. His experience at both NHL and AHL levels provides him with an understanding of different playing styles and strategies that can be applied to different types of teams. Additionally, his experience working with young players through his work with USA Hockey’s national team development program gives him insight into how to develop players at both an individual and team level.
