On the first Saturday of May each year, people from all over the world come together to celebrate World Labyrinth Day. The event, organized by The Labyrinth Society, aims to unite individuals globally through a shared love for labyrinths – the meditative and spiritual maze-like paths that have been found throughout history. This year’s event will take place at the labyrinth located on the side lawn of the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew at 8 Church Street in Greenfield.
Labyrinths, which can be traced back over 4,000 years, are said to symbolize unity, peace, and spiritual growth. They are believed to have been used for meditation and spiritual practices by ancient civilizations. Today, there are over 6,000 labyrinths listed on labyrinthlocator.com around the globe.
Elise Schlaikjer, one of the co-founders of the Friends of the Community Labyrinth who was involved in constructing the labyrinth at the Episcopal Church of Saints James and Andrew in 2019, believes that the popularity of labyrinths will foster a sense of peace and understanding among communities. She emphasizes the sentiment of feeling at home and unafraid when walking a labyrinth, encouraging participants to embrace the experience of getting lost within its paths.
