In 2024, Kelly Walsh High School from Wyoming won first place as the regional high school science bowl champion for the fifth consecutive year. To prepare for this competition, the KW Science Club holds mock science bowls throughout the year. Natrona County School District mentions that one of the highlights of participating in these competitions is learning how to respond quickly to questions and using strategic critical thinking skills to avoid making mistakes on the spot.
CY Middle School is also part of their STEM Club, which explores advanced scientific knowledge and competes in Science Olympiad competitions every year. From January to March, 115 regional high school and middle school teams from across the nation competed for a chance to attend the National Finals. The top 67 high schools and top 48 middle school teams were then announced as national champions. Unfortunately, Casper’s teams were eliminated before reaching the finals.
Dr. Harriet Kung, Acting Director of the Department of Energy Office of Science, expressed excitement at the start of the 34th National Science Bowl Finals. She highlighted that this event brings together some of the brightest young minds in the country and showcases the future of science and innovation. The top two middle and high school teams will earn $5,000 for their schools’ math and science departments, while other schools placing in the top 16 will receive $1,000 for their departments.
