The investigation into the terrible combine harvester accident that took place in Hohen Luckow on August 19, 2023, is now being handled by the public prosecutor’s office. Four months after the accident, which resulted in a 25-year-old farmer losing his legs, reports and interviews from the accident victim, his colleague, and the young woman who was operating the combine harvester are being evaluated.
The accident occurred while the farmer and his two colleagues were harvesting together in a field. The grain hopper of the combine harvester became blocked, leading to a decision to keep the machine running. The young woman in the driver’s seat remained seated and bypassed the safety mechanism that would have shut off the machine if she got up. This led to the tragic amputation of both of the victim’s legs when they were pulled into the screw conveyor.
The young farmer’s life was saved by his colleague’s quick actions, who pressed an emergency stop button to stop the machine. The emergency operation that followed was conducted by a top surgeon and his team who amputated both of the young farmer’s legs to save his life.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine whether any of those present at the time can be held responsible for a criminal breach of duty. They are also focused on determining what caused this terrible accident and how it can be prevented from happening again in future events like this one
