LUCI Wheelchair Technology Training Hosted by MSU’s T.K. Martin Center on April 26

The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability at Mississippi State University is thrilled to host a hands-on training session on the innovative technology of sensors for power wheelchairs. This event, titled “A Day with LUCI,” will take place on April 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the T.K. Martin Center and is aimed at professionals in the field of assistive technology, including occupational and physical therapists, speech language pathologists, teachers, and counselors.

The training will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of LUCI, a smart sensor power wheelchair system designed to prevent injury and damage during wheelchair use. They will learn about the programming, options, and features of the LUCI system through classroom instruction and hands-on training sessions that include practicing using LUCI on different styles of wheelchairs. The smart sensors in the LUCI system alert users when they are too close to an obstacle, enhancing safety and promoting independent mobility.

Rebecca Mathis, an assistive technology specialist at the T.K. Martin Center, emphasized the importance of hands-on experience in understanding technology and its limitations: “The session is designed to foster collaboration and learning across disciplines that work with assistive technology.” The T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability offers comprehensive evaluations and services to ensure that individuals with disabilities can benefit from technological solutions
