Measles Cases in Southeast Wales: Why Vaccination is Key to Preventing Further Outbreaks

There have been nine confirmed cases of measles in southeast Wales, which has led to concerns about the spread of the disease. Public Health Wales is urging parents and caregivers to ensure their children are fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine to prevent catching it. Early symptoms of measles include a high temperature, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and small white spots in the mouth.

The cases are currently in the Gwent area, which includes Torfaen, Newport, Monmouthshire, Caerphilly, and Blaenau Gwent. Public Health Wales is working with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board to identify contacts in each case and provide treatment and guidance to those affected. Beverley Griggs from PHW emphasized the seriousness of measles and the importance of vaccination, especially for vulnerable populations.

Children who have not received the full course of the MMR vaccine may have to be kept out of school for up to 21 days if they have been in contact with a measles case. Parents are asked to support efforts to prevent further cases in the community. Adults who have not been vaccinated and are in close contact with children are also urged to speak to their GP about getting vaccinated.

Prof. Tracy Daszkiewicz from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board highlighted the importance of timely vaccination, with the first dose recommended around 12 months and the booster at around three years and four months. However, it is never too late to get vaccinated
