A recent report from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General has shed light on the challenges faced by millions of Americans enrolled in Medicaid when trying to access mental health and addiction treatment services. The report reviewed eight states – Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Texas – and found that these states were not meeting federal requirements for coverage of mental health and substance use disorder services.
According to the report, these states were not providing adequate coverage for mental health and addiction treatment services as required by law. Specifically, the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act was being violated in some cases. This means that individuals seeking mental health or addiction treatment services through Medicaid may be unfairly limited in their access to these essential services.
