The United States men’s hockey team will have a new goalkeeper at the upcoming World Championship, as Michigan State University’s Trey Augustine has been added to the roster. The freshman goalie, who hails from South Lyon, was selected by Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the 2023 NHL draft. Augustine has already made a name for himself this season as a standout player for MSU, earning Second Team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman Team honors after starting in 35 games and posting impressive stats.
Augustine won Most Outstanding Player in the Big Ten Tournament and was also voted the Most Valuable Player by his teammates. He has had several standout performances this season, including a 34-save shutout at Ohio State in November and saving 60 out of 64 shots in a win over No. 1 Wisconsin. With his strong play on the ice, Augustine has become a fan favorite for MSU and will now have the opportunity to represent his country on an even bigger stage.
The USA Hockey team is well represented by Michigan State players, with Detroit Red Wings prospects Alex Lyon and Jeff Petry also on the roster. Head coach Derek Lalonde and goaltending coach Alex Westlund are also part of the coaching staff. Prior to playing at MSU, Augustine spent two full seasons for Team USA backstopping them to a gold medal in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Tournament. This upcoming tournament will be Augustine’s chance to showcase his skills on an international level and make his mark on world hockey history.
