Discussing the town’s latest weapon detection technology.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has recently announced plans to implement new weapon detecting technology in the transit system. The initiative aims to enhance the safety of New Yorkers by utilizing this innovative technology. However, the rollout of the technology is set to take place at only a few stations within the next 90 days.

Albert Fox Cahn, executive director and founder of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, appeared on NY1’s “Inside City Hall” with Bobby Cuza to discuss concerns surrounding the new technology. Specifically, Cahn expressed worries about the vendor responsible for the machines and their accuracy. There are ongoing legal issues such as a class-action lawsuit and a federal probe that further fuel these concerns.

Despite these concerns, some advocates believe that the pilot program could be beneficial for improving safety in the city’s transit system. They hope that with proper implementation and oversight, the new technology will help prevent crime and keep New Yorkers safe.
