In response to two deadly accidents that occurred while using Ford’s Blue Cruise hands-free driving system, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a formal investigation. The technology, which was first introduced in 2021 and is now available in various Ford and Lincoln models, allows drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel and feet from the pedals while driving on selected highways. Blue Cruise uses cameras, sensors, and detailed map data to keep the vehicle in its lane and adjust its speed to maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. An internal camera monitors the driver to ensure they are paying attention to the road.
Both of these crashes took place at night and resulted in at least one fatality in each incident. One accident happened in San Antonio, while the other occurred in Philadelphia. The investigation will examine both the system’s performance while driving the vehicle and its ability to monitor the driver.
Ford has stated that they are working with regulators on this investigation but were not immediately available for comment on CNN’s request for a response. The NHTSA aims to determine what led to these fatal accidents involving Blue Cruise in Ford vehicles, which could potentially impact consumer safety on American roads.
