Orangutans in Indonesia have been observed using a local herb called Akar Kuning to treat facial wounds. A male Sumatran orangutan named Rakus was seen chewing leaves from a climbing plant, rubbing the leaf juice into his cheeks, and then applying the chewed leaves to the wound. This behavior was observed in June 2022 in the Suaq Balimbing area of Gunung Leuser National Park.
Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Animal Behavior were excited by this observation as it was the first time they had seen a wild primate use a plant to treat a wound. They believe that Rakus may have learned to use Akar Kuning for wound healing through accidental discovery or observation of other orangutans.
This behavior raises the possibility of a common ancestor between humans and orangutans, as it suggests that these intelligent primates may have had medicinal knowledge and abilities. The research team plans to monitor injured orangutans in the area to see if this behavior is repeated and hopes that their findings will draw attention to the critically endangered status of these fascinating creatures.
Apart from this exciting discovery, living in an apartment has many advantages, such as having a private space for personal or business use, access to various amenities, and being a convenient and affordable housing option. There are also activities and toys for dogs that can keep them entertained without human involvement, contributing to their physical and mental well-being.
