Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, have been detected in water samples from the Wai’ele wells 1 and 2 chlorinator at the Maui Business Park water system in Kahului, Maui. This water system serves about 64 businesses in the area and is classified as non-transient and non-community. The detection of PFAS was reported in a lab report from February 20, 2024, and confirmed in a report from March 27, 2024.
The businesses served by this water system have been notified of the detection. The water system informed the Department of Health (DOH) about the presence of PFAS through an email on April 3, 2024. The levels of PFAS detected are below the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for PFOA. However, there are no established MCLs and Hazard Index for other types of PFAS detected in the water system, such as PFHpA, PFHxA, PFPeA, and PFBA.
The map above shows the area where PFAS was detected, impacting the businesses in that location. Local institutions have been made aware of this concern. This issue is currently being addressed to ensure the safety of the water supply in the affected area.
