Pico Rivera officials announced on Tuesday that the city’s community venues, including the Pico Rivera Sports Arena and Streamland Park, may be shut down due to repairs needed on the Whittier Narrows Dam. The Army Corps of Engineers stated that critical flooding could impact these facilities if repairs are not made.
The closures of these facilities are expected to have a significant impact on the city’s economy, resulting in income and job losses. The Pico Rivera Sports Arena has been a popular destination since it opened in 1979, hosting concerts, rodeos, and cultural events for the Hispanic community in Los Angeles County.
Pico Rivera Mayor Andrew Lara expressed his concern about the potential loss of these valuable assets but highlighted the city’s resilience and strength. He stated that the city is working to secure funding for a $125 million revitalization program that includes developing new parks, open spaces, and sports facilities. Lara emphasized that this program will help mitigate the impact of any potential closures while capitalizing on new opportunities for growth and development.
