Health officials confirm discovery of rabid bat in Washtenaw County

In 2024, a rabid bat has been identified in Washtenaw County for the first time this year. The bat was discovered in the 48108 zip code, and health officials have tested a total of 13 bats so far. According to Ailen Velazquez, epidemiology coordinator for the county, it is not uncommon to see rabid bats in the area during the summer and fall months.

Over the past 18 years, more than 50 bats have tested positive for rabies in Washtenaw County, along with one horse and eight skunks. A map of cases between 2011 and 2023 shows that several animals were found in the Ann Arbor area. As of May 1st, seven bats have tested positive for rabies in Michigan this year, with cases reported in Wayne, Lapeer, and St. Clair counties. Residents can report exposure to rabies or animal bites online for assistance from public health staff.

It’s crucial to take precautions against rabies by ensuring all open doors and windows have screens to keep bats out of your home. Checking for small openings is also important as bats can enter through holes the size of a dime. If you are bitten or scratched by a stray or wild animal, seek immediate medical attention after cleaning the wound with soap and water.

Another key prevention measure recommended by health officials is keeping all pets up to date on their rabies vaccines. This can help prevent rabies from spreading throughout your community if an infected animal comes into contact with pets that are not vaccinated against it.

In summary, residents should remain vigilant about preventing exposure to rabies by taking necessary precautions such as screening doors and windows, checking for small openings and seeking medical attention immediately if exposed to an infected animal or pet that has not received its vaccine.
