World Rugby is considering implementing new guidelines to address the challenges posed by high temperatures during matches. These guidelines may include longer half-times and more frequent water breaks in hot and humid conditions. Players traveling to compete in warmer environments could also be required to complete a heat education module to ensure their safety.
The chief medical officer of World Rugby, Eanna Falvey, emphasized that these measures aim to prevent the postponement or cancellation of matches due to extreme heat. In addition to extended breaks and water intervals, players may be encouraged to keep on damp shirts to regulate body temperature. There could also be a recommendation for an acclimatization period of up to two weeks when players change regions and environments.
Falvey acknowledged the challenges that teams face when traveling between different climates and altitudes, such as in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup competitions. The proposed guidelines may include strategies like delaying kick-off times for cooler conditions. These guidelines will also be integral to planning for the 2027 men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.
