The United States has accused Russia of using chemical weapons in the conflict against Ukraine, as announced in a statement from the State Department. This came along with new sanctions being imposed on Russia. The list of sanctioned individuals included over 200 people, while 80 companies and individuals were hit with financial penalties for their alleged violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
According to a report, the State Department has concluded that Russia used chloropicrin against Ukrainian military forces. Chloropicrin is a substance listed as prohibited by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and can have an irritating and suffocating effect in high concentrations, although it is not considered a neuroparalytic poison. It was previously used during World War I.
There has been no response from Moscow regarding this accusation. Earlier, the Ukrainian military had reported that Russian troops had used chemical substances on the battlefield but no casualties were reported as a result. These allegations continue to be a point of contention in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
