In a recent statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed that the recent bombings targeting Ukraine’s energy grid were part of the Kremlin’s aim to “demilitarize” Ukraine. During a meeting with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin emphasized that the attacks were intended to influence Ukraine’s military-industrial complex. He also justified the bombings as a response to Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure in Russia, including refineries.
Putin explained that Russian forces had refrained from targeting Ukrainian electrical installations during the winter of 2022-2023 for humanitarian reasons, in order to prevent disruption to social infrastructure such as hospitals. However, a new wave of bombings targeting the Ukrainian electricity network began in March, with dozens of missiles and drones directed at key infrastructure. The ongoing attacks have left President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine pleading for assistance from Western allies to provide anti-aircraft defense systems.
