Hospitality Business Resolves Lawsuit Alleging Pregnancy Bias and Retaliation

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced that Savage River Lodge, a Maryland hospitality business, has agreed to pay $150,000 and provide additional relief to settle a pregnancy discrimination and retaliation case. The Frostburg-based business offers cabins for rent and operates a restaurant for lodge guests.

Savage River Lodge failed to provide an employee with the necessary accommodations during her pregnancy, leading to her termination after she disclosed her miscarriage. This behavior is in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, as stated by the EEOC.

As part of the settlement, Savage River Lodge has agreed to take steps to prevent future incidents of discrimination and retaliation against pregnant employees. The settlement serves as a reminder that employers must comply with anti-discrimination laws and provide accommodations to pregnant employees as required by law.
