Garden City Elementary School recently received a Green Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education for their efforts in reducing environmental impact, improving the health and wellness of students and staff, and offering sustainability education. In recognition of this achievement, state and local officials will meet with Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services to discuss the importance of mental health awareness.
During the event, there will be a focus on mental health awareness, with leaders engaging in conversations with students about their well-being. The goal is to provide resources and intervention opportunities within Rhode Island schools. This event coincides with National Mental Health Awareness Month and will kick off at 9:30 a.m. It is a significant step towards supporting the mental well-being of children in the community.
In addition to discussing mental health awareness, Dr. Delphin-Rittmon will also have the opportunity to tour the new school, which includes wellness spaces that promote mental health. Garden City Elementary School has made it a priority to create an environment that supports the mental well-being of its students and staff, recognizing that mental health is just as important as physical health.
This event is an important step towards breaking down the stigma surrounding discussions about children’s mental health and providing support for students, families, and caregivers.
