Over the weekend, the Michigan Science Olympiad took place at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The Brighton High School Science Olympiad team excelled in one event, finishing first in the state. Their victory came in the Scrambler event, where teams had to build a small car that traveled a certain distance. The team’s coach, Shannan Pereira, expressed pride in her students’ hard work and determination.
Pereira, also an engineer, commended her students for their performance against the best teams in the state. She has been coaching Science Olympiad at the high school for nine years and at Scranton Middle School for four years. Despite tough competition, both the Brighton High School and Scranton Middle School teams held their own. The Scranton team finished 20th out of 48 teams while the high school squad finished 21st.
Scranton Middle School excelled in two events earning medals in the Pentathlon and Dynamic Planets. In the Pentathlon, they finished sixth participating in a relay race with physical tasks and science questions. They also placed seventh in Dynamic Planets which covered topics like earthquakes and volcanoes. Pereira emphasized the dedication and effort of all students involved highlighting their hard work throughout
