U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) recently announced The Bakery on Broadway of Audubon County as her Small Business of the Week. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, Ernst plans to highlight a small business in each of Iowa’s 99 counties throughout her term in Congress.
The Bakery on Broadway is known for its delicious baked goods and custom cakes, as well as for bringing a taste of the West Coast to Audubon. Kate Hargens, the founder of The Bakery on Broadway, aimed to rejuvenate downtown Audubon and provide a space for the community to come together. Since its establishment in 2020, The Bakery on Broadway has been hosting events like “What’s Happening in Audubon” forums and “Art on Broadway” exhibitions to support local artists.
Hargens has a background as a food scientist and licensed at-home baker and has been actively involved in the community. She served as president of the Children’s Nest Childcare Center and was part of the fundraising committee for the Audubon Rec Center. In recognition of her dedication, the Audubon Chamber of Commerce named her the 2016 Citizen of the Year.
